Like all medicines, treatment with medicines for hepatitis C can also cause a few side effects. Side effects vary a lot from person to person and are far lesser with the newer drugs.

Some of the common side effects of the hepatitis C medications include fatigue or tiredness, nausea, headache, rashes and anaemia (low haemoglobin). Talk to your doctor to know more about them.

Ribavirin can cause serious birth defects. Pregnancy should be strictly avoided (in case of a male patient, in your partner) while taking it and you must use two effective forms of birth control, one for you and one for your partner. An example is a condom for the man, and a diaphragm or birth control pill for the woman. This type of birth control should be maintained during the whole time you are on combination treatment and for 6 months after your last dose. Ribavirin therapy has also been associated with a blood disorder called anaemia, resulting in shortness of breath and extreme tiredness.

Always inform your doctor immediately in case of any side effects. DO NOT STOP your medicines without consulting your doctor.
